Sippin’ in Seersucker
Sippin’ in Seersucker
Event on 2012-05-18 00:00:00
My oh my, it must be a Southern summertime. How can you tell? The seersucker, of course. The Shops at Canal Place are behind this evening of Southern art, cocktails, light cuisine, raffle prizes, fashion and shopping to benefit the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Quintessentially Southern cocktails take care of the sippin' part; light bites come with compliments of fine area restaurants.
Seersucker is the quintessential Southern summer fashion. The word is derived the Hindi, Urdu and Persian words "shir o shakar" meaning "milk and sugar" – a reference to the alternating stripes woven into the fabric. So shake the mothballs off your seersucker and vie for a chance at winning the best seersucker ensemble contest. 6 pm-9 pm at 333 Canal Street. Dress is summer cocktail; seersucker preferred, of course. , for museum members if purchased before May 18. / day of the event. Tickets at store.ogdenmuseum.org/sippin-in-seersucker-tickets.

Man without a Cell Phone
Man without a Cell Phone
Event on 2012-05-12 19:00:00
“Jawdat, a restless young concrete worker, just wants to have fun with his friends, talk on his cell phone and find love—a near impossible task in a place where politics and traditional values dominate. Adding to Jawdat's problems is his curmudgeonly father, Salem, who establishes the film's irreverent tone with his opening pronouncement of his people’s dilemma: 'Coexistence, my ass!'
"Dragging Jawdat and the entire village into his outrageous battle against an Israeli cell-phone tower that he fears is poisoning them with radiation, Salem and his hysterical behavior stand in stark contrast to Jawdat’s cool attitude that wins the hearts of Muslim, Christian, and even Jewish girls while wrestling with college entrance exams. In his humorous, sharp take on the social milieu of a Palestinian village inside Israel, director Zoabi realizes good-natured humor often produces a far stronger impact than bludgeoning audiences with polemics.”
