Anne McCue Gets Help on New Album, ‘Koala Motel,’ from Friends Lucinda Williams, John Doe, Jim Lauderdale, Heart’s Nancy Wilson and Producer Dusty Wakeman
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (PRWEB) June 29, 2006
Anne McCue’s second album for Messenger Records, which follows 2004’s enthusiastically received Roll, represents an extraordinary leap made by an already impressive talent. It goes beyond affecting songs and inspired playing and singing, and creates its own world.
Due out September 19, the album is once again co-produced by Dusty Wakeman (Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam) and McCue at mad Dog Studios in Burbank. Koala Motel finds the Australian-born, Los Angeles-based writer/singer/guitarist surrounded by the estimable rhythm section of bassist Wakeman and drummer Dave Raven, with keyboardist Carl Byron completing the lineup. This group effort from four simpatico musicians is further enhanced by strategic vocal contributions from Lucinda Williams, John Doe, Jim Lauderdale and Heart’s Nancy Wilson (who also plays mandolin on one track.)
McCue, who grew up in Sydney and has a degree in film production and film studies, expresses great admiration for the movies of Ang Lee, Quentin Tarantino and Sergio Leone. Koala Motel’s opening track is in the film noir style, and the final (title) track moves more toward the style of a Spaghetti Western theme. The recording is an intricate ensemble piece of another kind.
“The four of us have been working as a unit for the last two years,” McCue points out, “and we’ve become really close, musically and personally. We recorded this album as a band. Dave and Dusty are both from Texas, and I’ve come to realize Texans and Australians are very similar. Being part of such a great band is like a dream.”
McCue has assimilated certain vintage sounds into her own style, here employing them as subtle and complementary reference points. There are echoes of The Doors’ L.A. Woman (“Driving Down Alvarado,” with John Doe riding shotgun), Tupelo Honey-era Van Morrison (“Hellfire Raiser,” to which Lucinda brings an inspired degree of nuance) and the classic Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris duets (“Shivers,” with Lauderdale providing the chorus harmonies.) The lone non-original among these dozen songs is Tony Joe White’s 1972 swamp-rocker, “As The Crow Flies,” which showcases the band’s rarefied command of deep gut groove.
The media has taken note of McCue since 2002’s Roll album. Rolling Stone noted that “McCue wields potent bluesy rock against her unaffected, naturally wistful voice.” Billboard called her a “triple threat: a potent singer, thoughtful songwriter and tough guitarist (who) completely comes into her own on this project.” The L.A. Weekly cited McCue’s “poignantly plaintive voice and multi-ranged guitar chops that swing from tasty Delta blues to stinging slide chordings to fat feedbacked riffs.” And Entertainment Weekly summed it up: “McCue is forging a unique voice.”
With the appearance of Koala Motel, there is no longer any question that we’re witnessing the maturation of an important new artist, in real time. Anne McCue’s voice is one we need to hear.

Where is All the Best HD TV Programming?
Article by Jon Jacobson
Once you get all of the channels and services available with today’s satellite TV packages, you might find yourself lost in the shuffle. Did you forget why you ordered all these channels in the first place? A period of adjustment is always in order after getting hooked up with different types of programming. However, when you want to get started watching the best HD programming on the air, you can make a few pit stops. Check out these five high quality options as soon as your service gets installed.1. HBO. You can look to HBO for movies, of course, but you can also go there for original series you won’t find anywhere else. Once the home to The Sopranos (still available with HBO On Demand), HBO continues to keep the hits coming. For the best of the new batch, check out Big Love and watch a drama unlike anything that has ever made it to home entertainment. The HD series will keep you more than occupied when the films of the night are not on your radar.2. Showtime. Another movie channel which has become known for its top-shelf original series is Showtime. The Tudors and Californication have been sensations for several years now, while Nurse Jackie starring Edie Falco has become one of the latest programs to turn heads and attract large audiences. Of course, there are always a wealth of films and sporting events as well when you have caught up with all the big shows.3. Sports packages. Baseball, basketball, hockey and football fans will all find packages bringing them live action every day of the week during the seasons. For die-hard enthusiasts, it’s really the only way to go. Out-of-market coverage is one of the key features, making a move to another city irrelevant when you want to stay connected to your favorite club. Looking across the pond, the Spanish and English soccer leagues are also when you’ve been displaced across the continent or love to see the action regardless.4. Animal Planet and other nature networks. There are a lot of contenders to the ‘benefitted most from HD coverage’ title, but it’s hard to dispute the claim on behalf of nature channels. It is hard to imagine Planet Earth being produced if this technology were not in place in the majority of modern TV sets. Journeys thousands of leagues under the sea become spectacles of incomparable beauty with the latest in nature programming. Some of it has to be seen to be believed.5. Turner Classic Movies. Another area which benefitted immensely from the advent of high def technology was classic film archives. Whether you are a fan of early film noir or can’t get enough of classic Technicolor productions, you’ll see these films in a way you’d never have thought possible. Couple Turner Classic Movies with IFC and the Sundance Channel and you have a giant film archive which complements the premium networks nicely. Stop by these networks to get a look at the other side of cinema.

Joseph Losey’s rarely seen remake of the Fritz Lang film. In a large city, a series of violent murders of young girls terrorizes citizens and baffles police. A nervous young man, Martin Harrow, stalks several children and soon focuses his attention on a little girl playing alone at a neighborhood carnival. Martin buys a balloon from a blind street vendor, then walks away with the child, whistling a peculiar tune. Later, after the child’s body is discovered, police chief Regan makes a television announcement disclosing that evidence collected in the case indicates the same modus operandi found in previous killings, death by strangulation and the shoes of the victim taken. After the police warn the public to take extreme caution and report all suspicious behavior, many people overreact and harass several innocent men. [TCM]

This is the full story of a singular moment in history, not Earth history or human history but all of history — the story of everybody — and the how and why that make all the difference. This is epic space-punk: space opera with a cyberpunk attitude and a touch of film noir.
Meteroric: Racing History, Volume I is available in its entirety (Episodes 1-7) at the DPPstore (http://www.dppstore.com). It can also be purchased one Episode at a time in seven different eBooks: Catch a Fallen Star, Episode 3 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-07-4); Chrylis Crater, Episode 7 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-11-1); Closer to the Stars, Episode 2 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-06-7); Crash and Burn, Episode 5 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-09-8); Meteorite, Episode 6 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-10-4); Out of the Wasteland, Episode 1 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-05-0); Wish on a Star, Episode 4 (ISBN: 978-1-933746-08-1). “Scott is an excellent storyteller,” says DPP critic Jacki Buck. “The settings are fascinating –rich and intricate, and the characters are well thought out and completely believable even within their fictitious scope.”
A scientific journalist and editor, C.A. Scott is author of many articles and magazine supplements covering biotechnology. As a technical editor, she has been a guest at several west-coast science fiction conventions. Science fiction is her passion.
Scott contributed an excerpt from the Racing History series to DPP’s collection for the World eBook Fair, taking place July 4-August 4, when 1/3 of a million eBooks will available for free downloading at http://worldebookfair.com/.

Question about females in film noir?
Question by MG: Question about females in film noir?
What are the characteristics of a femme fatale?
Best answer:
Answer by Felicia
A femme fatale (pronounced /ˌfɛm fəˈtæl/ or /ˌfɛm fəˈtɑːl/; French: [fam faˈtal], with all [a]‘s) is a mysterious and seductive woman[1] whose charms ensnare her lovers in bonds of irresistible desire, often leading them into compromising, dangerous, and deadly situations. She is an archetype or stock character of literature and art. Her ability to entrance and hypnotize her victim was in the earliest stories seen as being literally supernatural, hence the most prosaic femme fatale today is still described as having a power akin to an enchantress, vampire, female monster or demon.
The phrase is French for “deadly woman”. A femme fatale tries to achieve her hidden purpose by using feminine wiles such as beauty, charm, and sexual allure. Typically, she is exceptionally well-endowed in addition to possessing these qualities. In some situations, she uses lying or coercion rather than charm. She may also be (or imply to be) a victim, caught in a situation from which she cannot escape; The Lady from Shanghai (a 1947 film noir) is one such example.
Although typically villainous, femmes fatales have also appeared as antiheroines in some stories, and some even repent and become heroines by the end of the tale. In social life, the femme fatale tortures her lover in an asymmetrical relationship, denying confirmation of her affection. She usually drives him to the point of obsession and exhaustion so that he is incapable of making rational decisions

Top 5 Best Indie Movies Of the Last 10 Years
Article by Clyde Rems
Independent film has given us some of the greatest moments in cinematic history, from Christopher Nolan’s narrative busting, amnesiac murder mystery – Momento, to Richard E Grant’s career defining portrayal of drunkenness and tortured genius in Withnail and I. Selecting a top five took a few takes to get right but here are our top five independent movies ever to grace the silver screen.
City of God. Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro the film follows are young slum kid surrounded by crime, corruption and violence. Fernando Meirelles, Katia Lund and their crew had to spend as much time trying not get shot as they did trying to shoot the movie. City of God features screen debuts from inexperienced actors who make the film not only believable but beautifully powerful as well.
Brick. Rian Johnson’s film noir directorial debut won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2005. It tells the story of Brendan Frye trying to solve the mystery of his estranged girlfriend’s murder. With a classic hardboiled detective story reminiscent of Dashiell Hammett, set in high-school suburbia Rian created a postmodern masterpiece with fully realised characters, idiosyncratic dialogue and a great who-done-it plot.
Memento. Christopher Nolan injected new life into the ‘character with amnesia’ genre while simultaneously innovating narrative structure by telling the story in reverse order as Guy Pearce tries to solve the mystery of his wife’s murder while suffereing from chronic short term memory loss. The result is an engaging film that keeps the audience guessing even once its finished.
Dead Man’s Shoes. Paddy Considine plays the protagonist who, on returning from serving in the English army, starts a terrifying campaign of revenge on the men who bullied and killed his little brother. Here director Shane Meadows made one the finest British films in years, cementing himself and Paddy in the cinema history with a movie that never fails to shock, no matter how many times you watch it.
Donnie Darko. It’s got some 80s teen high-school drama elements, some heavy philosophical musings on time travel and the rest is pure supernatural thriller. Donnie Darko is not easily pigeon holed and quickly became a cult hit with both younger enthusiasts and experienced critics alike. It’s just a shame director Richard Kelly hasn’t been able to hit the same spot with the rest of his projects.
Some of the best films made in the last 10 years have been independent which shows you don’t need huge budgets to tell a great story, just some good ideas and a lot of hard work.

Comedy Duo Premieres New Show at Second City Theater
Comedy Duo Premieres New Show at Second City Theater
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 2, 2006
“Would you like a little accordion with your comedy?” You’ll get it—-along with a lot of laughs–in DEB AND RICK ON A STICK, a new variety/sketch comedy show created by comedy partners Richard Kuhlman and Deb Hiett. DEB AND RICK ON A STICK will have four local performances in July at the Second City Theater in Hollywood before the dynamic duo hits the road for the northern end of the Big Orange. From there, it’s on to the Big Apple!
“It’s like Mike Nichols and Elaine May, but with an accordion,” laughs Kuhlman in explaining the show. “Look, there’s only so much ‘Deal or No Deal’ a TV-viewing audience can take,” adds Hiett. “Sometimes, people need a little live accordion, whether they know it or not.”
Rick Kuhlman, a Second City alumnus, currently stars in Second City’s ongoing “Totally Looped” comedy show. Television audiences have seen him in a variety of programs, including “Seinfeld,” “Grounded for Life,” and “My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé,” where his improv skills proved a valuable asset. Rick performed onstage with Deb at L.A.’s Improv Olympic West in “Graceland,” and has also directed over a dozen theater productions in and around Los Angeles.
Deb Hiett is a busy actress and comic who spent years doing theatre in New York, as well as playing accordion in the “cabaret pop noir” band, Orson Welk. Since relocating to the west coast, she has appeared on “Desperate Housewives,” “Boston Legal,” and been featured in three opening comedy sketches on “Real Time with Bill Maher.” Most recently, Hiett was proclaimed “a house-rattling find…with deft comic timing” by The Los Angeles Times.
DEB AND RICK ON A STICK features sketches about love on the FedEx voice-activated phone line, couples therapy with a twist, and two writers who desperately try to make sense of the convoluted storyline of a famous 1940’s film. In a musical section of the show, Hiett plays the accordion and she and Kuhlman take the audience through a unique musicology lesson.
“There is nothing like live theater, and we’re thrilled to be performing at Second City,” exclaims Hiett, who has been writing with Kuhlman for the past three years. Following their Los Angeles engagements, the pair looks forward to taking their entertaining, hour-long show to theaters in Northern California and New York.
DEB AND RICK ON A STICK performs Thursday July 6, and Friday July 7, at 8pm; Saturday, July 8 at 9:30 pm; and Thursday, July 20 at 8pm. The Second City Theater is located at 8156 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles. All tickets are $ 10. Call 323/658-8190 for reservations, or visit http://www.debhiett.com for more information.

Movie: The Son of No One (2011)Release Date:4 November 2011 (USA)Directors: Dito MontielWriters: Dito MontielGenres: Action | Crime | Thriller
Son Of No One is a movie that i was very excited to experience, Maybe Because this is one of Channing Tatums Serious Movies, Or Maybe Legendary Actor Al Pacino Plays a part in this Movie. Now i know many have criticized Channing Tatum as an untalented actor , but in some of his films i saw a lot of potential in him. Channing Tatum plays Jonathan , Who is a new cop, with a young family. Al Pacino Plays Detective Stanford who was once Jonathan’s Father’s Co worker or more of a friend. As the story goes we find out that Jonathan killed two junkies in an accident when he was young, Detective Stanford being a friend of his father’s was at the crime scene helped Jonathan To Cover Up the incident,
Now Jonathan has to face his past again as the information of an old case being set up suddenly gets released by local Papers. Which Turns out to be Jonathan’s Own Haunting Incident. Jonathan Starts to investigate this case, at the same time searching for the Source, So he can save his job and his life. The movie is Decent. But it could have been a lot better, I think many will agree with me on that one. The Performance is good, but the characters could have been explored more. Channing Tatum Still needs more time to perfect his roles, as for Pacino he was one of the elements that carried the film. The ending twist was disappointing as you can easily predict it before it happens. This movie had a lot of potential , it really could have been a much better movie.
It kills me to say this but Al Pacino hasn’t had a good film role in years. He’s been great in TV movies but lately it’s been 88 Minutes, Righteous Kill and the upcoming The Son Of No One (which saw numerous walk-outs at Sundance). That could change as Pacino is in talks to star in his first studio film since Ocean’s 13. Pacino is in talks to star in Imagine for Warner Bros., where he’d play an aging rock star, in the mold of Bruce or Keith Richards (which judging from the
Katie Holmes hasn’t really worked the romantic comedy angle since the 2004 flop First Daughter, but it looks like she’s giving the genre another try. The Hollywood Reporter says that producers at Cannes are looking to pre-sell the international rights for Responsibile , which will feature Katie as a woman who realizes she used to babysit her young boyfriend, to be played by Chace Crawford. Though since the age difference between the actors is only about seven years, we wouldn’t say this really qualify as some cougar biz.
Holmes has been pretty busy of late, with the Guillermo Del Toro-produced thriller Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark and Jack & Jill with Adam Sandler set to come out later this year (her Sundance stinker The Son Of No One, with Channing Tatum and Al Pacino, is still waiting for a release date). While none of her recent
While it doesn’t sound very Dread Central oriented, we’ve been assured by the powers that be that the latest film from Raw Feed creator Tony Krantz is home to lots of things close to the hearts of you wondrous sickos out there. Hence the coverage!
