“Dorme” Selected for Prestigious San Francisco International Film Fest; Opening April 26
“Dorme” Selected for Prestigious San Francisco International Film Fest; Opening April 26
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 10, 2007
Sylvia Binsfeld’s short film Dorme (“Sleep”) – selected for competition in the esteemed San Francisco International Film Festival (“Up, Up & Away” shorts collection) as well as Robert de Niro’s taste-making Tribeca Film Festival – is a stylistic, sensuous, 7-minute fantasy that sweeps viewers away into a world of music, beauty and wonder.
A resident of Petaluma with both commercial and film credits to her resume, Binsfeld shot Dorme on Super 35 mm film. She designed her shots precisely for adding approximately 100 digital effects. In postproduction, Binsfeld worked closely, shot for shot, with master digital effects artist Steve Wright, whose credits include Spy Kids 3D, Ray, Ali, Batman & Robin and Traffic.
As a senior visual effects artist with production experience on over 60 feature films, Wright says he was quite taken with Binsfeld’s cinematic prowess. “I was deeply impressed not only with Sylvia’s ability to produce and direct high end visual effects on a limited budget, but also with her unique creative vision and gift for storytelling. She really should be directing big budget commercials – where she is sure to achieve spectacular results.”
Sixty-four of the 65 shots in Dorme have composites and digital effects, including 3D animation, digital matte painting, greenscreen compositing and multi-plane compositing. One particularly complex shot is comprised of 14 effect layers along with additional embellishments, such as lantern glow with inter-active light. The camera goes over rooftops and comes across a boy walking through toys and a star field.
According to Binsfeld, “My inspiration for Dorme came after being enchanted by the Brazilian lullaby of the same name, composed by the multiple platinum-winning musician, Arnaldo Antunes. While I listened, the mesmerizing melody brought back memories of my childhood imagination, and the visuals and story started to evolve. The song also stirred my fascination with the power of our subconscious minds and the world of dreams; that mysterious place our spirits go to play when our bodies sleep at night. I set out to create a playful romp in dreamland, rich in clever symbolisms.”
The short resonates with all people of all ages. Says Roberta Marie Munroe, former short programmer for the Sundance Film Festival: “Binsfeld has gone beyond the average children’s story, creating a sparkling, fantastical drama for all ages.”
In addition to San Francisco International and Tribeca in New York, Dorme will screen this month at festivals in San Diego, Reno and Danville. The film played to a packed audience and was met with critical acclaim at San Jose’s Cinequest in March, another one of the largest and most influential film festivals featuring new film makers.
Binsfeld is known for her directorial versatility, hitting both humorous beats and emotional chords. She produced numerous commercials for Bay Area clients, including the sensual “My Boudoir” lingerie spot, and the comical “Fall’n Angel” auto body spot, winning her a first place Telly award. Binsfeld directed and starred in the noir short, Hot Winter Night, which heated up the 2003 international festival circuit.

KHOJ International Artists’ Association presents Peers 2011 from June 17, 2011
KHOJ International Artists’ Association presents Peers 2011 from June 17, 2011
Event on 2011-10-17 11:30:00
New Delhi: KHOJ International Artists’ Association presents Peers 2011 – art works created by 5 recent graduates from art/ architecture/design institutions from all over India. The selected artists have worked in a month-long residency programme at Khoj Studios and will show their work from June 17, 2011 to June 19, 2011
Initiated in 2003, with support from the IFA (India Foundation for the Arts), Peers is an annual education and outreach residency programme that brings together five recent graduates from art institutions all over India. For four weeks, these young artists shed the expectations and rigidity of a structured curriculum, working together in a discursive space that stresses the role of free experimentation and risk-taking in art practice.
The selected students of Peers 2011 residency programme include : Aarti Sunder (Academy of Fine Arts and Craft, Rachana Sansad, Mumbai), Kundo Yumnam (NIFT, New Delhi), Maripelly Praveen Goud (Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda), Muthiah Kasi (D J Academy of Design, Coimbatore) and Pallavi Singh (College of Art, New Delhi). Apart from the students in residency, the critic – in residence, Aparna Singh (Visva-Bharati, Shantiniketan) would actively engage with the practitioners and work on a well-research paper that contextualizes and critically examines the Peers projects.
Says Pooja Sood, Director, KHOJ International Artists’ Association: “Ever since its inception, the Peers residency has become one of the most important programmes at Khoj.Khoj provides digital laboratories, extensive research archives and the opportunity to engage with a larger artists’ community, some of whom participate in a mentor’s role during the residency. Visits to artists’ studios, gallery exhibitions and other events in Delhi are organized during the course of the residency. The Peers artists are encouraged to move out of the physical environs of the studios and explore the area and its community”.
With the commercial boom in the art market, many students were absorbed directly into the gallery system right out of college. Without the structure and security of the institution and faced with the immense challenges that the professional art scene poses, the practice of many young artists runs the risk of falling prey to predictability brought on by the vagaries of the art market. Khoj fills the essential vacuum between the structured environment of an art school and the rigors of the professional art scene. At the residency, artists are encouraged to shed the inhibitions and step outside of their usual art practice, innovate and experiment with new forms of art making, which they may not otherwise have the time nor space to do. The importance of peer to peer learning through interactions and exchange cannot be underestimated. Five practitioners bring together varied experiences of their background, place and practice. Students from established centres of art practice interact with talented artists from smaller towns; trained painters meet cartoonists, amateur film makers, architects…. all of which results in a potent environment for exciting new art practices to emerge!
Artist Aarti Sunder is creating a series of characters with the help of installation and drawing as a part of the series. Aarti’s work is site specific, the artist is correlating the plain walls in the studio at KHOJ in every drawing. The artist regards working with real space as a big challenger for her. “How to use the real space and how to make it a part of the work. How to relate the real object with the idea, without losing its existence”, she says. Aarti’s sketches can be seen as a part of exploring every aspect of the studio space.
On the other hand, Kundo Yumnam plays with the space and atmosphere in the room. The artist's interactive project deals with censorship and curiosity. By creating a Pandora’s box, the artist delves into the world of curiosity and censorship. Pandora – a box that contains all the evils of the world. The viewer would be left with an option to open the mystical Pandora box or not depending upon his level of curiosity.
Artist Pallavi Singh deals with the intricacies in the mind of a male aged between 40 to 60. The mind set, the desires, the sexual thoughts and dilemmas forms the focal point in the artist’s work. Pallavi shows the contrast between the actions and the inner desires of a male. The actions are symbolized in the form of photographs while the desires are symbolized with the help of negatives.
Muthiah Kasi experiments his thought process through wood block paintings. In the project, Muthiah deals with the monotonous life and dreams. The artist has symbolized monotony with a machine has hence shows how in this commercialized world, we are moving away from our dreams. The artist represents this process with paintings and installations.
Like his peers, artist Praveen Goud also explores the power of the sub-conscious mind. The artist plays with an offset printer grid paper by twisting, twirling it into different shapes and forms depending upon the mind frame of the user. Goud deliberately uses the grid paper to show ups, downs, depth and volume of a form. The mindset here not only explains the destructive nature of a human mind but also introduces the audience to the constructive mind with the help of an installation created by the artist with these shapes and forms of the crushed paper glued together.
Since 2003, many Peers alumni have gone on to win prestigious awards; they have been invited by established galleries to participate in important exhibitions; but most of all they have achieved an imperative leap in their own individual practice- which is after all the most important factor for an artist.
Participants are invited through an open call for applications, the last date for which is usually end- February/ early March. From almost 100 applications, 5 artists and 1 critic in residence are chosen. The selection process is based on bringing together a diverse group of practitioners, both in terms of art background (previous Peers have included painters, print makers, film makers, architects from institutions as well as amateurs who display exceptional talent) as well as from cities and towns all over India.

Synaesthetic Theatre Announces the International Debut of The Trial of K
Synaesthetic Theatre Announces the International Debut of The Trial of K
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 7, 2007
Synaesthetic Theatre, a Brooklyn based multimedia theatre collective, has been invited to perform their original play noir The Trial of K at the International Arts Festival of Castilla y Leon, on June 3, 2007 at the Teatro Caja Duero in Salamanca, Spain. The production originally premiered off-off Broadway in 2005 at the Culture Project’s 45 Below Theatre in lower Manhattan.
The International Arts Festival of Castilla y Leon is an initiative supported by the Cultural and Tourism department of the Regional Government of Castilla y Leon in Spain. Silvia Clemente Municio, Minister of Culture and Tourism comments “Over sixteen days, the International Arts Festival will give us the opportunity to gather together art and cultural tradition, creative skills and genius in an urban setting. This event was born with a clear cut aim: opening up to the latest ways of expressing and feeling art and culture. This festival has always been geared towards achieving manifold aims, namely going beyond local colours, opening up wider horizons, and positioning Salamanca in the center of the stage arts.” The festival runs June 1 – June 16th, 2007, and will offer 130 different shows from eighteen countries, in categories such as indoor theatre, dance, large scale street performances, electronic music, graffiti, and video.
The Trial of K is a live multimedia Play Noir inspired by Franz Kafka’s unfinished masterpiece, The Trial. The production blends physical theatre, dance, live streaming surveillance video and original music with the visually intense genres of German Expressionism and classic Film Noir. Synaesthetic Theatre’s adaptation pits a charmingly arrogant Josef K (Margaret O’Sullivan) against an all-encompassing Court of Law. Author Kafka (Clinton Powell) orchestrates K’s descent, as K loses ground through interactions with a surreal series of characters – men and women drawn by the scent of his “guilt.” Under the strain of constant surveillance, anti-hero Josef K topples from indignation into fear and doubt, eventually embracing the inevitable verdict.
Synaesthetic Theatre’s The Trial of K is a multimedia interpretation of Kafka’s classic work (written in 1914), presented through the lens of our current socio-political landscape of increased surveillance and disappearing civil liberties. In The Trial of K, Synaesthetic Theatre focuses on Josef K’s libidinous behavior and resistance to self-scrutiny, both underlined by the constant voyeurism present in Kafka’s novel.
Co-directed by Joy Leonard and Chris Nichols, The Trial of K features Margaret O’Sullivan as Josef K, Clinton Powell as Kafka, and Tina West, Joy Leonard, Ted Hannan, Joy Lynn Alegarbes, and M.A. Makowski as a rotating parade of characters. Designers John DesRoches (Video), Rench (Composer), David Crittenden (Costumes), Paul Hudson (Lighting) and David Szlasa (Set) contribute live video surveillance, an original trip-hop score and a stunningly visual environment inspired by the shapes, lines, angles, and shadows of German Expressionism and Film Noir.
Synaesthetic Theatre is an experimental collective that expands the role of theatre artists through process-driven performance and multidisciplinary training. Directors, designers and performers collaborate in a unique process to develop, write, and create each show, resulting in truly ensemble-driven work. Since 1997, Synaesthetic Theatre has created and produced nine original multimedia plays for the theater. From its inception as a small artistic collective, Synaesthetic Theatre has grown into an organized non-profit company of 15 collaborating member artists, presenting an annual season of educational development programs for performing artists and creating a new multimedia production every 1-2 years.

Brubaker Films, in association with T-Street Productions, gain acceptance into the 2004 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival.
HOLLYWOOD, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2004
“Earl’s Your Uncle” was written by Jared Tweedie, directed by Thomas Phillips and produced by
Jason P. Brubaker of Brubaker Films LLC, in association with T-Street Productions.
A very prestigious invitation, the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival is sanctioned by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. In the past, nineteen of the films screened have been nominated for Oscars in the best short film category. Five have won.
Earl’s Your Uncle is a sort-of-film-noir-comedy with a fantastical edge exposing the dark underbelly of crime, deceit, malice, mayhem and well stale doughnuts. The film was shot in b/w Super 16mm during March 2004.
Brubaker is excited. “The crew has worked very hard to make this happen. I couldn’t have asked for a better, more talented team. Tom and Jared deserve this. They work very hard. And the LA Short Fest is an honor.”
Phillips says he really enjoys working with Brubaker because he is so supportive and encouraging. “All I know is this… When Brubaker says he is going to do something, he does it. No excuses. He takes the good with the bad. I can’t wait to read Seven Ten Split and move into a feature.” (Brubaker is currently packaging his feature project, Seven Ten Split. The film is slated for production in Brubaker’s hometown of York, Pennsylvania in September 2005).
